Quick Bite With Minnow Hamilton

Quick Bite With Minnow Hamilton

One of the co-founders of  SavvyMom.ca, it’s no stretch to say that Managing Editor Minnow Hamilton is just a little obsessive about food. Savvy aims to provide practical solutions to the everyday frustrations Canadian mothers face – and family-friendly recipes make up a big part of that. When she’s not working with a cross-country team of writers, she can be found on a ski hill or baseball diamond with her two very active boys (aged 11 and 13).  She likes most things Irish (like her husband of 15 years) and loves to find a good deal—on anything, really.

Q: What’s your earliest memory of food?

A: Spaghetti and meat balls (pronounced piscetti and meaty balls) was my fave dish when I was really little. Then I graduated to chicken parmesan when I was old enough to go out for dinner – I thought I was so grown up ordering something I couldn’t really read. Clearly I had a thing for Italian food.

Q: What prompted the idea of SavvyMom.ca?

A: The need for an email newsletter that spoke to Canadian moms with respect, humour and insight. There wasn’t anything else like SavvyMom when we launched in 2005.

Q: What’s your greatest frustration in the kitchen?

A: Not having a sous chef.

Q: Who’s your dream dinner guest?

A: Anyone who loves my cooking and asks for seconds – then offers to help with the washing up.

Q: Salty or sweet?

A: Salty, for sure

Q: What’s your favourite dish to make with your two boys?

A: They like tacos and I like fish so my favourite compromise (not necessarily theirs) is Fish Tacos [http://www.savvymom.ca/index.php/eatsavvy/meals/fish_tacos/]. Even at their age they still love to be able to choose their own toppings. Don’t forget the mangoes.

Q: Is there a dish that still intimidates you? What is it, and why?

A: Anything made with pastry is not my thing. It’s too exact for me. I like recipes where I can add a bit of this and a bit of that.

Q: What are some of your future goals for SavvyMom.ca?

A: We would like to be a household name in Canada as the go to resource for Moms online
