Roundup: Weekend Baking

Roundup: Weekend Baking

I’ve taken the liberty to create a list of five reasons why you should bake this weekend. Sounds silly. It won’t after you read the list:

1. I know you’ve been secretly hoarding the kid’s Halloween candy so you can mindlessly hammer mini candy bars while watching the episodes of Glee you pvr’d. (I’m looking at you Ceri Marsh!) Anything on this list is better for you to hoard and eat while the kids are asleep.

2. It’s your excuse to avoid raking the boat-load of leaves on the ground. You: “Oh, rake? Yes, great idea. Plus so much healthier for the lawn come spring but the oven is on. Sorry. I have to wait for these [insert baking item] to come out.” You’re welcome.

3. The kids are bored!

4. That drawer, closet, or old college trunk that you stub your toe on every, friggin time you go downstairs to do the laundry (someone remind me to move that) will still be there next weekend. I know you promised yourself to deal with it but you’ll have plenty of other opportunities to bin all the old receipts from clandestine shopping excursions, the five-year old booklet on breast milk storage and the keys to God know what that are now jammed into the balm of an old, capless lip treatment.

5. You’re bored of watching the kids be bored.

Now here are a few recipes to choose from…..

Wholegrain Blueberry Muffins are the perfect snack for the week so double the recipe.

Homemade Oreo Cookies (above) may not be wildly healthy but you can’t win them all.

Graham Sweet Potato Cupcakes are a surprisingly nutritious treat, especially if you leave off the frosting.

Nutmeg Crumble Cake is the next best thing to your local bakery’s butter-laden coffee cake.
